WHAT TO EXPECT
Your physical therapist will first assess your condition and determine if BFR therapy is appropriate for you. During a session, a specialized cuff is applied to your arm or leg to partially restrict blood flow. You’ll then complete light exercises under close supervision to ensure proper form and safe pressure levels.
Sessions are short, but the results are powerful. Most patients feel muscle fatigue quickly during BFR, but without the strain that usually comes with heavy lifting. You’ll likely see improvements in strength, function, and recovery speed within just a few sessions, especially when combined with other physical therapy techniques.
OVERVIEW
Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) therapy is an advanced technique that helps patients build strength and recover faster by using low-load exercise combined with controlled blood flow restriction. A specialized cuff is applied to the limb to partially restrict blood flow while you perform targeted exercises. This safely tricks the body into thinking it's working harder than it actually is, triggering muscle growth and healing.
BFR is ideal for people who can’t tolerate heavy lifting due to injury, surgery, or pain. It’s commonly used in post-operative rehab, sports injury recovery, and for patients with limited mobility. With guidance from a trained physical therapist, BFR therapy can deliver faster gains in strength and endurance using lighter weights and shorter sessions.
